Can I use the photo for a digital online application?

UK passport renewals also accept a digital photo uploaded directly. The digital and printed rules differ slightly — for printed submissions follow the spec above; for digital uploads check the gov.uk uploader's on-screen rules.

What if I'm a baby or child?

The same 35×45 mm size applies. Children under 6 are not required to keep a neutral expression, and babies under 1 are not required to have eyes open.
